My Teacher, The Computer
My Teacher, The Computer is a task performance project that has become an invaluable source for me in teaching reading to students of all ages. First and foremost, My Teacher, The Computer enhances thinking and reasoning skills by introducing: comparing and contrasting information on different sites and blogs; analyzing relationships through the use of tags and keywords; development of argumentation through the justification and validation of sites;and making inductions and deductions. Those of course are more advanced processes used daily in reading and goals that need to be reached. To simplify the process I have gone to the extreme of developing a student's task performance project on planning, designing and developing their own web site. The project is of high interest yet on a low level. I've found some students to know quite a bit more then me so I learn from them. No harm in a teacher learning from a student. This article shall be based on the first stage of the My Teacher, The Computer Project, knowledge utilization processes and strategies for reading in the content area. Knowledge utilization processes involve four areas: decision making, problem solving, investigation and experimental inquiry. In order to set these processes in gear some applied reading strategies need to be examined. How can anyone design a website before they examine the KWL: What you know; what you want to learn; and what you have learned. In Microsoft Office the student designs a table with the KWL as headers. Under each section there are several slots for information to be entered. With this completed they now have a road to follow. Two things could occur next, outlining or webbing. I'm visual so I tend to encourage webbing then outlining. Graphic organizers can be of any shape as long as the major topics lead to more minor supportive data. These techniques also enhance concept building through understanding and demonstrating key terms. Finally in this beginning phase the famous SQ3R (survey, question, read, retell and review)strategy is quite effective. Students don't even know they are using a reading strategy because the only way they can come to a conclusion in the planning stage of their website is to implement this strategy. A rubric has been developed to not only guide students through their journey but to evaluate their progress with objective goals. |
